Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken announced a commitment to provide approximately one billion euros in military assistance to Ukraine during a recent meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky. This package includes 216 million euros for the procurement of 155 mm ammunition, aligned with a Czech initiative, and 200 million euros for air defense systems under a German initiative. Additionally, discussions are underway regarding the potential supply of F-16 combat aircraft. Zelensky acknowledged the offer and proposed a number of counter-offers, which are currently being evaluated by the Belgian Armed Forces General Staff and budgetary authorities. Francken indicated that while Belgium is prepared to enhance its support for Ukraine, any further measures would require governmental discussions. This significant pledge underscores Belgium’s strategic commitment to bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities amid ongoing regional tensions.
