The Government of Canada has awarded a contract to Irving Shipbuilding Inc. for the construction of the new River-class destroyers, enhancing the Royal Canadian Navy’s fleet under the Our North, Strong and Free (ONSAF) defense initiative. This contract, valued at $8 billion, funds the initial six years of construction and the delivery of the first three vessels, with the potential fleet expanding up to 15 units. The River-class destroyers will replace four decommissioned Iroquois-class destroyers and 12 Halifax-class frigates. Based on BAE Systems’ Type 26 frigate design, these ships will displace approximately 6,900 tons, measure 150 meters in length, and achieve speeds exceeding 26 knots with a range of 7,000 nautical miles. Armament includes the Sea Ceptor missile system, a Mk.41 vertical launch system for Tomahawk cruise missiles and ASROC anti-submarine missiles, and a 127mm naval gun, supplemented by 20mm and 30mm gun systems. The deck is equipped to accommodate heavy-lift helicopters like the CH-47 Chinook. This program not only aims to bolster Canada’s naval capabilities but also supports the economy by preserving 5,250 jobs through 2025 to 2039, representing a significant step in Canada’s commitment to modernizing its defense infrastructure.
