New Indian Navy Frigate Project 11356 Trials Begin

Baltic Shipyard “Yantar” has commenced factory sea trials for the second Project 11356 frigate built for the Indian Navy, initially laid down for the Russian Navy in 2013 under the name “Admiral Istomin” (hull number 01361). This ship represents the eighth addition to the Indian fleet of Project 11356 frigates. Originally, “Yantar” was contracted to deliver six frigates to the Russian Navy, with the first three entering service in the Black Sea Fleet from 2016 to 2017. However, due to the deterioration of relations between Russia and Ukraine, the subsequent trio of frigates remained incomplete due to a lack of power plants, prompting a halt in production. In late 2018, a resolution of outstanding issues led to a contract between Russia and India for the delivery of four Project 11356 frigates. The fourth and fifth vessels, “Admiral Butakov” and “Admiral Istomin,” are planned for delivery by mid-2024, while two additional ships will be constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited as part of a technology transfer agreement. Notably, the frigates displace 4,000 tons, reach speeds of 30 knots, and possess an operational range of 30 days. Their armament includes a 100 mm A-190 artillery system, anti-aircraft missile and artillery complexes, torpedo and anti-submarine warfare capabilities, and high-precision BrahMos cruise missiles. The integration of a Ka-27 or Ka-31 onboard helicopter enhances their operational versatility. The successful realization of this project underscores the strengthening of India-Russia defense cooperation and India’s naval modernization efforts.
