The Philippine Air Force (PAF) has presented a proposal to the Department of National Defense for the acquisition of an additional 12 FA-50 fighter aircraft manufactured by South Korea, aimed at bolstering the country’s defense capabilities. This initiative is part of the third phase of the Modernization Program for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (MPP AFP), which focuses on enhancing military intelligence, logistical support, and deterrence capabilities. Currently under review by the Department of National Defense, this acquisition is intended to strengthen the PAF’s operational effectiveness in executing its mandated tasks. The PAF initially contracted 12 FA-50PH aircraft in 2014 under a government-to-government agreement with Korea Aerospace Industries, with deliveries completed between 2015 and 2017 at a cost of 18.9 billion pesos (approximately $420 million). The FA-50PH has been pivotal in advanced pilot training, airspace patrol, and support for military operations, notably during the five-month siege of Marawi in 2017. However, following a recent accident on March 4, 2025, that resulted in the loss of two pilots, flight operations for the remaining aircraft have been suspended pending an investigation. The proposed acquisition of additional FA-50s signals a significant commitment to enhancing the PAF’s operational capabilities amidst evolving security challenges in the region.
