The USX-1 Defiant, a 55-meter unmanned naval vessel developed by DARPA, is currently undergoing sea trials as part of the U.S. Navy’s NOMARS program. With a displacement of 240 tons, the USX-1 is entirely crewless, lacking any onboard infrastructure for human habitation or support functions. This design feature contributes to its reduced dimensions, enabling prolonged autonomous operations that can last for months while complying with maritime navigation rules and collision avoidance protocols. NOMARS builds on DARPA’s previous maritime projects, including the ACTUV program aimed at ASW and reconnaissance through experimental unmanned platforms.
