Global Coalition Proposes Space Debris Cleanup Plan

Experts from Russia, the United States, and China, collaborating through the Three Country Trusted Broker (TCTB), have proposed an initiative to the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs aimed at developing a pilot project for removing large pieces of space debris in low Earth orbit. This proposal, submitted by Valentin Uvarov, director of the Space Economy and Policy Research Center, follows a “space experiment” conducted during the International Conference on Space Debris and Sustainable Development in Hong Kong, where three key principles of collaboration were analyzed: cost-sharing, risk-sharing, and information-sharing. The TCTB model received support from more than twenty countries’ representatives, including scientific and government experts. Their proposal requests the UN to form a working group to create a joint plan for orbital debris removal and to conduct a technical project presentation within the upcoming session from June 25 to July 4. This initiative is strategically significant as it addresses the critical and growing issue of space debris, emphasizing international cooperation in ensuring the sustainability of space operations.
