Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt has acquired a controlling stake in Relativity Space, a Long Beach, California-based aerospace company focused on launching rockets. Since October, Schmidt has been involved with Relativity as a technical consultant. On March 10, 2025, the company announced its plans for the Terran R rocket, which is designed to carry 33.5 tons to low Earth orbit in expendable mode and 23.5 tons with a reusable first stage. Unlike its previous reliance on 3D printing for rocket components, Relativity is now sourcing parts from external suppliers, particularly in Europe, with the aim of having the first flight version of the Terran R ready by 2025. Additionally, Relativity Space has been selected by the US Air Force, alongside other aerospace companies, for the Orbital Services Program 4, which focuses on launching small satellites for national security purposes. This acquisition and strategic pivot underline Schmidt’s commitment to advancing capabilities in the competitive space launch sector.
