In January 2025, a newly formed U.S. Army unit, designated the Multi-Purpose Company (MPC), conducted an operational trial employing a combination of strike and reconnaissance drones, electronic warfare (EW) capabilities, and fire support from anti-tank guided missiles, mortars, and snipers. Established under the Army’s Transformation in Contact (TIC) initiative, MPC aims to enhance the integration of advanced technologies and tactics observed during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The unit, assessed during the Combined Resolve 25-1 exercise in Germany, comprises three platoons focused on proactive engagement at a range of 3-4 kilometers from the main brigade. Equipped with the Ghost drone from Anduril and bolstered by a reconnaissance platoon utilizing Javelin missiles and C-100 quadcopters, MPC’s modular structure aims to streamline command hierarchies, thereby reducing target acquisition time. The exercise leveraged the operational synergies of the platoons and incorporated a tactical mesh of electronic countermeasures and artillery support. As the U.S. Army transitions to a more agile and lethal force structure post-restructuring, the effectiveness and future deployment of the MPC are crucial indicators of the Army’s adaptive response to modern warfare challenges.
