The Australian Department of Defense has signed a contract with Boeing Defence Australia for the modernization of its fleet of six E-7A Wedgetail airborne early warning and control aircraft, valued at AUD 569 million (USD 360 million). This upgrade aims to enhance the operational readiness of the aircraft and incorporate technological advancements over the coming years. The modernization program will improve associated ground support systems, ensuring the aircraft remain serviceable for the next decade. Since the initial contract in December 2000, which included the acquisition of four E-7A aircraft, the fleet has achieved full combat readiness as of May 26, 2015. A first phase of modernization began in July 2017, investing AUD 582.5 million (USD 443 million) to integrate advanced reconnaissance equipment, new data transmission lines, upgraded communication and encryption systems, as well as satellite communication capabilities. This project not only emphasizes Australia’s commitment to maintaining cutting-edge operational capabilities but also represents a significant investment in domestic industry, with AUD 200 to 240 million allocated and 165 specialists engaged across the nation. The enhanced E-7A will provide superior multi-role surveillance and command functionalities, bolstering Australia’s strategic aerial defense operations.
