The Czech Ministry of Defense has confirmed its commitment to procure 24 F-35A Lightning II fifth-generation fighter jets, progressing according to schedule under an intergovernmental agreement that ensures legal and logistical security. Responding to media inquiries, the Ministry emphasized national control over the operational use of the aircraft, negating any possibility of remote shutdowns by the U.S., though access to specific cryptographic keys may be restricted. The U.S. State Department approved the potential sale in June 2023, valuing the transaction at approximately $5.62 billion, which was formalized through a memorandum of understanding signed on January 29, 2024. Compensation programs will engage 13 Czech companies, facilitating 11 projects with Lockheed Martin and three with Pratt & Whitney, focusing on component production, R&D, pilot training, and maintenance of the F-35. The acquisition process will unfold over 11 years, with initial deliveries expected by 2031, while existing Gripen fighters will remain operational until 2035 as negotiations for their extended use continue. This procurement signals a significant modernization of the Czech Republic’s air capabilities, enhancing national defense while fostering domestic industrial involvement.
