Estonia Boosts Defense with Turkish Armored Vehicles

The Estonian Centre for Defence Investments (ECDI) has announced the acquisition of approximately 50 armored vehicles for the 2nd Infantry Brigade from Turkey. The primary model in this delivery is the Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) “Arma,” configured as a 6×6 vehicle, alongside 4×4 NMS armored vehicles intended for operational use by the 1st and 2nd Infantry Brigades. A portion of the 4×4 vehicles was also earmarked for the Estonian Rescue Department. Designed to meet Estonian Armed Forces requirements, these vehicles arrive nearly operational, requiring only the installation of communication systems and additional equipment. Initial deliveries commenced in late 2024, with troops from the 2nd Infantry Brigade already training on the new platforms ahead of the Siil exercises scheduled for May. The new fleet, equipped with 12.7 mm caliber machine guns, significantly enhances troop protection against small arms fire, mines, and shrapnel, while also improving mobility compared to previously used logistics vehicles. Recent contracts with Turkish manufacturers Nurol Makina and Otokar, valued at approximately €200 million, further bolster Estonia’s defense capabilities with additional procurements planned over the next decade, emphasizing a strategic commitment to strengthening military readiness.
