The Tupolev Tu-214R reconnaissance aircraft offers advanced surveillance capabilities, including the unique ability to detect underground objects. Commissioned by the Russian Main Intelligence Agency (GRU), the Tu-214R operates three units that are among the most modern of their kind. Equipped with a MRK-411 system featuring multiple radar stations and the optical reconnaissance system “Fraktsiya,” the aircraft boasts an active radar range of 250 kilometers. Its standout feature, a ground-penetrating radar, can identify concealed military assets hidden beneath soil, snow, or foliage, making it especially effective for locating camouflaged enemy installations. The successful deployment of the Tu-214R in conflicts in Syria and Ukraine has underscored its tactical importance, allowing Russian forces to conduct efficient enemy surveillance. As alternative long-range radar reconnaissance solutions are proposed, the Tu-214R remains a critical component of Russia’s strategic military capabilities.
