The Republic of Korea Navy has received its first of 12 MH-60R Seahawk multi-role helicopters, procured through the U.S. Foreign Military Sales program. Delivered by sea on February 25, 2023, the helicopter has successfully completed initial flight tests in South Korea, according to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA). Continuing through 2025, additional helicopters are set to arrive, with armament integration planned for 2026. This acquisition is part of the Maritime Operation Helicopter batch-two program, with a budget of approximately 960 billion won (around $878 million). Following a proposal request published in May 2019, the U.S. State Department approved the sale, which includes cutting-edge radar, targeting systems, and various support equipment valued up to $800 million. These helicopters will enhance the navy’s capabilities in anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, reconnaissance, search and rescue operations, supply missions, and medical evacuations. As the Republic of Korea faces regional threats exemplified by North Korea’s estimated 70 submarines, these advanced helicopters are crucial for maintaining maritime security and operational readiness.
