The Royal Thai Air Force is currently evaluating the acquisition of Airbus A-330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft to replace its aging A340-500 fleet. As outlined in the 2024 White Paper, this procurement is part of a broader plan to upgrade VIP transport capabilities between 2025 and 2028, with the first A-330 MRTT expected to serve as both a refueling aircraft and a versatile platform for troop and cargo transport, as well as medical and humanitarian evacuations. The project budget is set at 12.14 billion baht (approximately $359.3 million), encompassing the aircraft, auxiliary equipment, spare parts, and support systems. The timeline anticipates completion of the acquisition process by late 2025, with deliveries slated for 2028 to 2029. While there has been historical resistance to expanding the VIP transport fleet due to costs, the decision to pursue the A-330 MRTT reflects a strategic shift, aligning with practices in countries like the United Kingdom that leverage multi-role platforms to improve operational efficiency and reduce expenditures. This acquisition will not only enhance the range and effectiveness of the Royal Thai Air Force’s air mobility capabilities but will also position Thailand to fulfill increased operational demands in a cost-effective manner.
