Rheinmetall is set to supply the Ukrainian Armed Forces with the advanced Skyranger 35 air defense system, derived from the legacy Leopard 1 tank platform. Currently in development, this system is anticipated to begin delivery in 2024. The Skyranger 35 features a 35 x 228 mm Oerlikon KDG cannon capable of firing 1,000 rounds per minute, with a magazine capacity of 252 rounds, designed to effectively neutralize both basic and sophisticated drones within an operational radius of 8 kilometers. The turret integrates key components from Rheinmetall’s MANTIS ground-based air defense system and is equipped with four S-band AESA antennas, each covering a 90-degree sector, along with a Ku-band fire control radar and an electro-optical system. The turret is remotely operated, necessitating the addition of a second access hatch on the Leopard 1 chassis for crew entry. This strategic advancement underscores Rheinmetall’s commitment to enhancing Ukraine’s drone defense capabilities amid ongoing regional tensions.
